Kim Yun-Man

Abstract
The author has studied the prevalence of patient¢¥s experience with recurrent aphthous ulceration, recurrent herpes labialis and Vincent¢¥s infection on the students of Dental School and Medical School in Seoul National University, and the hospital nurses of N. M. C. , and Severance.
The author also has observed the interrelationship between the recurrent aphthous ulceration and recurrent herpes labialis.
Oral examination of patients who had reported the recurrence of recurrent apthous ulceration was performed, and then, the cytologic findings of recurrent apthous ulceration and recurrent herpes labialis were observed by means of Modified Pharr¢¥s Staining Technique of Papanicolaou¢¥s Staining Method.
The obtained results were as follows;
1. The prevalence of recurrent aphthous ulceration was observed 50.9 per cent of male, 72. 1 per cent of female, and 59.3 per cent of total population. The sex difference was significant.
2. The prevalence of receurrent herps labialis was observed 23.1 per cent of male, 38.2 per cent of female, and 29.0 per cent of total population. The sex difference was significant.
3. The Sexual difference on the recurrence frequencies of canker sore and fever blister was not observed.
4. Subjects susceptible to episodes of recurrent aphthous ulceration experienced more frequent recurrence than the subjects susceptible to recurrent herpes labialis.
5. It was revealed that the most common site of recurrent aphthous ulceration on the oral mucosa was labial mucosa, followed by buccal mucosa, tongue, gingiva, and hard palate.
6. The prevalence of acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivostomatitis was observed 3.8 per cent of male, 8.8 per cent of female, and 5.9 per cent of total population.
7. Cytologic findings of recurrent aphthous ulceration and recurrent herpes labialis had revealed that the degree of keratinization of exfoliated cells with no cellular malignancy was decreased in compare with that of exfoliated cells from normal person, and the number of the leukocytes and the degenerative changes of epithelial cells were increased.
